Instrumentation for Oil & Gas Operations in Atlantic Canada
Oil and gas operations require precise, reliable instrumentation in some of the most demanding conditions anywhere in industry. High pressures, hazardous atmospheres, corrosive process fluids, and strict regulatory oversight mean there is no margin for instruments that drift, fail, or go uncalibrated.
K&D Pratt’s Instrumentation team has decades of experience supplying and servicing instrumentation for oil and gas operations across Atlantic Canada, including work on projects for ExxonMobil, Suncor, Husky Energy, Hebron, and Aker. We understand the regulatory environment and the operational reality of keeping offshore and onshore facilities running safely and efficiently.
We supply, install, commission, calibrate, and service the instrumentation your operation requires.
Why Instrumentation Matters in Oil & Gas
In oil and gas, the cost of instrumentation failure goes well beyond downtime. A miscalibrated custody transfer meter creates billing disputes and regulatory exposure. A gas detector that fails to alarm in a classified hazardous area is a life safety event. Pressure instruments that drift out of specification on a high-pressure line represent risk at every level to personnel, to the asset, and to the operator’s regulatory standing.
Instrumentation in oil and gas serves five core purposes:
- Custody transfer accuracy: fiscal meters measuring oil, gas, or produced water for billing and royalty purposes must be accurate, certified, and calibrated to regulatory standards
- Process safety: gas detection, pressure monitoring, and emergency shutdown instrumentation are the first line of defence against hazardous conditions in classified areas
- Corrosion and erosion management: offshore pipelines and process equipment are subject to continuous internal corrosion and erosion — real-time monitoring prevents failures before they occur
- Regulatory compliance: offshore operations in Newfoundland and Labrador are regulated by the CNLOPB; instrumentation must meet CSA and other applicable standards for hazardous area classification
- Remote and unmanned monitoring: many oil and gas installations require continuous automated monitoring with alerts to detect problems without personnel on site

Calibration and Compliance
Fiscal meters used for custody transfer are subject to Weights and Measures Act requirements in Canada and must be calibrated and certified to applicable standards. Safety-critical instruments, including gas detection systems, pressure safety devices, and emergency shutdown instrumentation, are subject to inspection and maintenance requirements under CNLOPB regulations and applicable OHS legislation for offshore and onshore operations in Atlantic Canada.
Electrical instrumentation in classified hazardous areas must meet Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards for explosion protection. Instruments selected for hazardous areas must be certified for the zone classification and gas group of the location — whether intrinsically safe, explosion-proof, or purged and pressurized. Pepperl+Fuchs intrinsically safe barriers ensure that instruments in safe areas can interface with field devices in hazardous areas without introducing ignition risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. K&D Pratt’s Field Services / IMR offering covers instrumentation regardless of the original supplier. If your facility has existing instruments that need calibration, repair, or integration into a compliant maintenance program, our team can assess, service, and document what you have — and provide the traceable calibration certificates your regulatory and audit requirements demand. Contact Instrumentation@kdpratt.com to arrange an assessment.
Internal corrosion and erosion thin the walls of pipelines and pressure vessels over time, eventually leading to leaks or failure. Traditional inspection methods require either shutting down the line or using internal inspection tools, both of which are costly and disruptive. Non-intrusive corrosion-erosion monitors — supplied by K&D Pratt through Clampon — attach to the outside of the pipe and use ultrasonic measurement to track wall thickness changes continuously and in real time, without any process interruption. This approach is particularly valuable for offshore pipelines and process equipment where shutdown costs are extremely high.
A fixed gas detection system continuously monitors enclosed and semi-enclosed spaces for combustible gases, toxic gases, and oxygen deficiency. Unlike portable detectors carried by workers, fixed systems are permanently installed and connected to control systems that can trigger alarms, activate ventilation, or initiate automatic safety shutdowns when a threshold is exceeded. On offshore platforms and in onshore processing facilities, fixed gas detection is a regulatory requirement under CNLOPB regulations and applicable OHS legislation. K&D Pratt supplies fixed gas detection systems through Macurco and portable detection instruments through MSA Safety.
Custody transfer metering is the accurate measurement of oil, gas, or produced water at the point where ownership or accounting changes hands — between a producer and a pipeline, or between an operator and a regulator for royalty calculation. Because the measurement directly affects billing and royalties, custody transfer meters are held to the highest accuracy standards and must be calibrated and certified accordingly. K&D Pratt supplies flow measurement solutions for custody transfer applications through our instrumentation vendor partners.
